Permalinks are important because they help the reader as well as Google search engine to identify the individual pieces of your content. All pages, categories, articles, images, etc... on your WordPress blog have its own

The problem with permalinks in WordPress

Unfortunately, the permalinks in WordPress are not good at all because the default permalink setting is not optimized, and usually occurs as http://domain.com/blog/?p=123. In this case, the number 123 is just the ID of a certain piece of content on your website.

This kind of permalinks is not good at all as it doesn’t tell anything about your content. For example, if you published an article about 5 Facts about Diabetes, the permalink by Google would be something like http://domain.com/blog/?p=374 giving you no idea about the content.

On the other hand, setting a permalink like http://domain.com/5-facts-about-diabetes would give you as well as Google a clear idea about the subject.

How to set permalinks in WordPress

You can either set a simple permalink structure for all your articles or set individual permalink for each.

1- Set up a simple permalink structure from the settings

To set a simple permalink structure from the settings for all your articles, follow the following:

  • Open your dashboard.
  • Go to Settings
  • Select Permalinks

As shown in the image above, you have many options. The post name is the best choice as there are no dates, numbers, etc… It only has the title which usually contains the keyword.

  • Then click save.

2. Set an individual permalink for each post/page

Although it is easier to set up an overall permalink structure set which works with all articles, you still have the opportunity to edit these permalinks at every individual post and page.

This is super easy and can be done in seconds. Just open the page where you edit its content.

You will definitely see a small box preceded by the word permalink. Click on the edit button, and edit with the words you want as shown in the image below.

Once you have finished, click on OK. That’s it. Great work

Set up Permalink with Yoast Seo
